('orruth, Lave Pratt and Frank De Kay, Jr. The party left Blaekfoot at 7 o'clock p. m. with two cars aud a tull camping equipment. equip-ment. They crosed the desert west Irom Hlackroot. going bv way uf Arco, Maeka v and (.hilly, and entered the basiu from the wnst. They traveled ali ijiii'nt anrl reached the camping grounds the following morning about 11 o'clock. They camped on the west fork of Big Lost river near the foot of Boulder pak and just at the edge of the pine timber. Fishing Is Good. A large stream of fresh spring" water ! from the snow-capped mountains in the i in mediate vieinit v, abundant firewood and shade made tho camp an ideal one, and the main stream of Lost river being be-ing only one-balf mile from camp, they had easy access to the best trout fishing in the entire west. Copper basin proper is about six miles long by four miles wide and surrounded on all sides by high, rugged mountains of the .Sawtooth range. Chicken hunting hunt-ing in the basin is unexcelled anywhere in the west, and those who are fond of this sport anxiously await tho open season sea-son for birds and long for an outing in this magnificent country. On returning homo the party left the basin by what is known as the mounlain pass at the east entrance, entering the Lost river valley at the Davidson ranch, seven miles north of Mackay. Road Is Picturesque. The distance over this route is much shorter, but is a most difficult road to travel with an automobile or any other vehicle. The scenery, however, is wonderful. won-derful. When you reach the top of the mountain moun-tain (elevation about L0,000 feet), and look down the canyon reaching into the valley, the sight is wonderful. The road winds its wav through the narrow mountain moun-tain defiles through a heavy pine forest, many of the pitches being so steep that they are descended with all brakes firmly firm-ly set, engines in mesh and long ropes attached to the rear of the cars. The first and only other car that ever succepsfullv made the Copper basin was owned and occupied by F. A. Sweet and familv. |
