Show SCHOOL BOARD WANTS i IKED LEVY Legislature Will Be Asked to Grant the Necessary Authority. An increase of 1 mill In the tax levy for school purposes in Salt Lake will be urged before the legislature, according to a decision reached last night at a meeting meet-ing of the city board of education. James T. Hammond, a former member of tho board, will present the claims of the board on the proposed levy and on other matters affecting the Salt I-ake school system that may come before the legislature. legis-lature. The vote on the report that the legislature leg-islature be asked to make the 1 mill increase in-crease passed by a vote of six to one, O. W. Moyle being the only dissenting member. Mr. Moyle urged the board to practice economy and declared there was no reason why building sites should be bought and allowed to he idle in outlying out-lying districts until buildings could be erected. Professor George A. Eaton, supervising principal of the. hlerh schools, told the members of the board that the contract between the high school cadets and the Standard Coal company with reference to the sale of coal on commission to obtain ob-tain money to cover the expenses of members mem-bers of the battalion to the Panama-Pacific exposition, had been entered into through a misunderstanding. Representatives Representa-tives of the coal company said the work had been offered in good faith on the plea of Professor Eaton to the business men to give work to the boys and stood as far as the company was concerned. The matter was referred to Superintendent Superin-tendent D. H. Christensen and Chairman George M. Sullivan of the committee on teachers and school work. The question of taking the school census cen-sus of Salt Lake was brought up by Superintendent Su-perintendent Christensen. He said that the present method of taking the census in June, on account of many students being out of the city, the city lost approximately ap-proximately $10,000 a year. He suggested sug-gested that the census be taken In October Oc-tober and Mr. Hammond was instructed to present the matter to the legislature. |
