BECOMES SARCASTIC Declares Disappointed Applicant Ap-plicant for County Job Was Too Slow. Barney B. Qulnn. the well-known Democrat, member of the county committee com-mittee and active In looking after the financial obligations of the Democratic organization, yesterday wrote a letter for publication In which he answers the statement made on the .lay before in which Albert J. Seare. disappointed candidate can-didate for marriage license clerk in the office of County Clerk Thomas Homer, set forth his grievance. Mr. Qulnn auggests that Mr. Seare's letter to the county chairman and his check were sent too late to be of service to Mr. Seare in his campaign for the ap-polntment ap-polntment he sought. Mr. Quinn's letter follows: Editor Tribune I notice In your paper an article under the heading, "Failure to Obtain Job Angers Seare. As I have figured somewhat conspicuously conspicu-ously In the matter, I may be able to throw a little light on the subject. In the first place, the gentleman making mak-ing the complaint appears to me trom his picture and I compliment him on i Me good looks to be the fat little 1 boy at the baby show, who. although he got the blue ribbon, was disap-! disap-! pointed at his failure to get first prize. But a person possessed of good looks Is not always blessed with good sense. ' Alleges Misstatements. His statements to the press indicate i that the gentleman is not only "Seare." but "yellow." His nils-statements nils-statements are shown by his communication com-munication to Chairman Kay Van Cott, dated January 2, 11115, and his delayed check for a campaign contribution, contri-bution, dated January 15. just eleven days after the new officers were sworn in. I will observe that if ! the gentleman had been as prompt ! as he was persistent he might have fared better. However, as he has seen fit to register regis-ter a kick, It might be appropriate for me to sav that as a member of the finance committee I have not seen anv contribution from him that I am aware of in aid of the fusion ticket. , YVthen I approached him with a view of getting from him a campaign con-' con-' tribution to aid In paying off the debts incurred by the committee, he swelled up and said with a burst of Indignation: "What, me? Contribute? I never heard of such a thing. I should think I was exempt and immune from any such assessment. It would be infra dignitatem (beneath my diginty) to be , thus assessed." i Well, there were several other ap plicants for the position, among them John Halvorsen, the successful candidate. candi-date. Mr. Halvorsen was recommended recommend-ed by some of the best Democrats and most prominent business men in the 1 county, among them being residents ! of Mr. Seare's own baliwlck, the Third ward. Helped Liberally. Mr. Halvorsen liberally contributed to help the campaign tho sum of S90. ' This happened on December :10, 1014. i Several davs later Mr. Seare heard of I the appointment of Mr. Halvorsen and i lie Immediately sent his communica tion to Mr. Van Cott and two weeks later than that sent his check to tho committee. ' His statements, which have been ' published, are without foundation. The offers he complains of were never made or considered. Kveryone was treated alike. I think the county clerk made no mistake In the appointment he has made. Respectfully, (Signed) B. B. QU1N.N", : Member Democratic Finance Com mittee, |
