Show PASSAGE OF ISLAND BILL RECOMMENDED WASHINGTON, Feb. 2. With a recommendation rec-ommendation for immediate passage, the revised bill for a greater measure of self-government and ultimate independence inde-pendence for the Philippines was presented pre-sented to the Benate today. The committee com-mittee report urged amendments including in-cluding a revision of the preamble. The substitute for the house preamble, the report says, is "deemed to be free of certain ambiguities in the house preamble, pre-amble, and avoids reference to debatable debat-able historical events included in the house preamble," and "states in plain language the reasons for the present bill, and declares the purpose of the United States with regard to ultimate independence under proper conditions." The senate committee urged action at this session because longer delay would inflame and provoke political agitation, possibly ' leading to disturbances and "increase present business depression in tho islands." |
