Show GRIND CONTINUES. Congress begins the week with but few members of either hou?e in attend- j ance upon the sessions and with the! prospect that others will steal awa- ! if given anything like a good oppor- j tunity. The antitrust bills now pending are of prime importance, but not nearly so important, to the average member of either mouse as his seat in congress; so it is not to be expected that they will attend to Uncle Sam's business and swelter in Washington wheu they have matters of their own to look after. The Democrats of tho house are fuming, fum-ing, foaming and fretting, for upon them devolves the duty of furnishing a quorum, while the Kepublieans are simply disgusted, not only with the policy of the Wilson administration, but the methods employed to cram it down their throats by keeping them in Washington all summer, perhaps until lute in the fall, unless they assent to the White house programme. So far as the Republicans are concerned, "dying in the last ditch " after a long and stubborn light against overwhelming odds appears to bo a duty they owe to the country, but it will not do a particle of good if the antitrust bills are to become laws in the end. The president is obsessed with the idea that all his projected "reforms" must be put through at this session, regardless re-gardless of their effect upon, the business busi-ness of the country and the health, of the unfortunate senators and representatives represen-tatives who have becu in almost continuous con-tinuous session since tho 4th of March, 1913. Evidently ho does not care either for the one or the other. The voters ; of the various states will register their i opinion of the course of the adrainistra- ' tion at the polls next November, but that does not improve the business situation at the present time or bring relief to the unlucky legislators. President Wilson is a hard taskmaster, task-master, and the members of his own party who -have so far jumped every time the whip has been cracked would be justified in refusing to.-follow any longer unless given a rest and a chance to recuperate. This may be the upshot of the whole matter some time during the next two or three weeks. |
