The bis auditorium was well filled when President Swain delivered his annual address, which was fondly applauded, ap-plauded, particularly by the women delegates dele-gates present, when lie made such statements state-ments as: 'Pay the teachers a living wage." ''Let the women teachers vote." "Provide a system of retirement allowances al-lowances so that teachers will be contented con-tented at their work." "Open more ' supervisory positions to women." "Choose the best person for a position regardless of sex." Proponents of the candidacy of Dr. j David Starr Jordan were elated over the ; declaration of - President Swain and pointed out that such views expressed by the administration would o a long way In bringing the support uf the ' women delegates to Dr. Jordan, who is termed the machine candidate by the southern delega tes. The campaign of the "solid south" in behalf of professor David B. Johnson, who is Dr. Jordan's chief opponent in the contest for the presidency of the association, asso-ciation, was being carried vigorously forward for-ward tonight, and convention politics perhaps per-haps were more conspicuous than at any previous meeting of the association. A proposal by E. E. Schribner of Ishpeming, Mich., for a federal bureau of education, with a representative in the president's cabinet, was well received by the convention and may be taken up by a committee. It was announced unofficially today that those in favor of simplified spelling j will make no effort to place the matter before the convention this year. |
