Show PROTESTS AGAINST ACTION OF PI11CH0T Montana Judge Holds Chief Forester For-ester Is Wrong in Withdrawing With-drawing Certain Lands. DILLON, Mont., March 31. District Judge Lew L. Callaway, chairman of tho Montana conservation commission, has made an energetic protest to Clifford Clif-ford Pinchot, in connection with the recent withdrawal from settlement or entry of immense tracts of lands lying along the Beaver Head, Madison, Missouri, Mis-souri, Jefferson and Gallatin rivers in Montana, to prevent their acquisition by power companies seeking to acquire dam ites. Judge Callaway .ays tho lands withdrawn with-drawn along the' Beaver Head river in Beaver Head county arc those lying high on the bench grounds, on which scores of dry farmers are now settling, and to continue tho withdrawal order in effect as it pertains to these lands, will result in irreparable- damage to Montana. Tho land withdrawn is utterly ut-terly unfit, declares Judgo Oallawaj', for purposes of power sites, and the drastic order can only result in the dissatisfaction dis-satisfaction of tho people with the administration ad-ministration in its efforts to conserve the resources of the country. The chief forester is askod to lake up the matter with President Taft in an effort to have that portion of tho withdrawal with-drawal order rescinded where the lands einbrncod are such as will not afford power sites and are adaptable to cultivation. |
