Show High School Athletics Tho first steps toward tho organization organiza-tion of the spring athletic teams have been taken at the High school and the outlook for n winning team in both track and baseball is exceedingly bright. For the past two years the High school track team has gono down to defeat de-feat at tho hands of tho Ogdcu and Lehi high schools and it was only bv a close margin that, tho team won third place last year. Tt is evident that tho poor showing was due to tlm lack of intorest in-torest taken by tho students and also by those who tried out for the team. Athletic enthusiasm is shown this year with a desire to regain tho lead in track events. For the past few weeks Capt. Karrick and Manager Cainc havo been busy in rounding up athletes. Matt. Gallachcr is somewhat of a sprinter, having run tho 100 yards in cloven seconds flat in tho gTado school track meet last year. Among those who reported Friday was Harry Miles, who ran the sprints for tho Carson City High school last .year. His best timo is ton and three-fifths seconda for tho 100 yards, and if he can duplicate tho trick he is almost sure of tho century. Along j with these two in the 100 and 220 will bo found Stone, Scranton, Fitzgerald, Zimmerman, H. Uomney and Morten, The 440 is tho hardest run of them nil. Kirbj and Stone havo signed up for this event, and Bhould make tho bunch move Bomo. A. Eomney and Backman will also try out for this event. In the mile and a half Capt. Karrick will be booked to win. Tho hurdle events have not as yet looked bright, as Moyle Grey is the only one who is left over 'from last year. The weights will be .-juggled by Wircf Kprns, Wheoling, Karrick, Brubcker, Kirby and Manning. The pole vault will fall to Gillilan and Beesley, the former having cleared ten feet. It will be hard to fill tho place of D. A. Callahan as coach, but an effort will be mauo to have him como down as often as possible and give pointers that havo in vears past put tho High school on top in tho line of track events- as well as in football. Coach McNieco will bo given all support possible. He haE had considerable experience along this line, having been verw prominent iu track athletics at Princeton. The baseball outlook is very good this year, as there are six of last year's team at school. Capt. Fitzpa trick has been busy trying to find somobodv to fill the places left by Stevens at catch, Fitzgerald at second, Brown at pitch and Billings in centerfield. At present there has been considerable considera-ble talk ubout forming a stato high school league, and if this is done the High school will not be able to enter tho city league that it has been plajing in for tho last few years. |
