Show OLD MAN KILLED BY AUTOMOBILE Couldn't Hear Warning Whistle of Chauffeur, Who Took All Precautions. Daniel Woods, porter at the Valley House saloon, was run over by an automobile au-tomobile at 9:110 o'clock Wednesday forenoon and received injuries from which he died at Holy Cross hospital a short time afterward. Woods was 70 3'ears of ago and very deaf. At the tinfo stated ho was crossing cross-ing the street in front of tho Shar-man-Ottinger Automobile company's garage at 111 West South Temple street nnd at the same moment a machine was being backed out onto the street by C. D. "Redman, a chauffeur employed at the place. Redman tooted his horn repeatedly re-peatedly as ho backed the heavy automobile auto-mobile out, but Woods apparently did not henr the alarm. He was struck and knockod down, the hind wheel passing over his body and crushing several sev-eral of his ribs, .Redman 's first knowledge of tho fact that an accident had occurred was when he felt an obstruction under tho wheels and saw the old man prostrate in the road. Ho immediately got out and called for holp and, according to all witnesses, did all in his power to assist as-sist the unfortunato man. Dr. Mayo was sent for and Woods was ordered taken to the Holy Cross hospital. Thero it was found that two of tho broken ribs had ponotrated the right lung. The old man died shortly before noon. The body was taken to the Evans undertaking establishment on State street, where it will be held until after the inquest at 11 o'clock today. Woods was a Scotchman and hnd been a resident of Salt Lake City for about thirteen years. He had no relatives rela-tives in this country. For sovcral months ho had- been employed at the Valley houso as a porter. The arrest of Redman immediately followed tho death of the old man. Ho was booked on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and released on $2000 bail. |
