Show EFFORTS Ml TO BLOCK HEARST CAME This Is Only Interpretation Placed Upon the Democratic Conference at Albany. ALBANY, N. Y Sept. 5. Events of importance in preparation for the Democratic State campaign took place here today, and the city is buzzing tonight to-night with political interest. First and seemingly of most importance "was tho conference of Democrats from many counties of the State, called to discuss the situation in the party, the central figure of which conference was District Attorney Jerome of New York It is conceded that this meeting was aimed chiefly at preventing, if possible, the nomination or indorsement b" the State convention at Buffalo, of William R. Ecarst. Several allusions in the speeches were interpreted as having no other possible meaning. The other incident was a conference of representatives of several , radical Democratic organizations, from which tonight emanated" a statement criticising criticis-ing Mr. Hearst and doclaring in favor of the nomination of Congressman William Sulzer of Now York. At. this conference was present Albert S. Dulin of New Jersey, declared to be a close personal and political friend of William J. Bryan, In an interview afterward Mr. Dulin spoke in favor of Mr. Sulzer. The Democratic conference was presided pre-sided over by Edward M. Shcpard of Brooklyn, and was addressed by Mr. Jerome and others. Adjournment was taken to September 25 at Buffalo, tho day and place of the Stato convention, and resolutions were adopted Betting forth "the views of tho conference and providing for the appointment of a committee to lay beforo the Democrats of tbe Stato the principles voicod by tho conference. |
