Show IDENTITY OF DEAD ' IH STILL MYSTERY Coroner's Inquest. Fails to Reveal Re-veal Any New Pacts in the Case. Half a day's testimony in tho Inquest held to Inquire into tho cause of death of the unknown man found in tho Jordan Jor-dan river Tuesday afternoon failed to bring any new facts to light or to rur-nlsh rur-nlsh a cluo to the dead man's Identity, the question as to whether he Is a victim of murder or suicide still remaining open. Witnesses Are Heard. Before Acting Coroner Smith and a Jury composed of H. S. I-mey. Ed Shcp-ard Shcp-ard and J. S. Smith, tho taking of testimony tes-timony was begun at 2 o'clock. Capt. liurbrldge of the police force. Ofllcer O. C. Brown, Judge C. B. Dichl, lJ. J. Daly. Lyman and Ruby Hendry. Jusslo and Christine Kalsmlth and J. li. Miller gave their testimony, which was in substance ns published In The Tribune Trib-une of Tuesday morning. Tho witnesses Nalsmlth and Hendry, school children, told of tho discovery of tho body, as it' lay Hooting In tho river below tho bridge nt Twelfth West and First North streets. They recounted how word had been sent to tho pollco late Tuesday afternoon. Capt. Burbldgc and the others who accompanied the wagon told tho story, ao published, of how they had dragged the bodj from the river and made a search of the clothing without with-out Jlndlng any articles or papers that would furnish n clue to the. Identity 'of tho victim. Hearing: Is Continued. Owing to the Inability of Dr. Stewart. City Physician, who conducted the post mortem upon tho body, to be present, tho inquest was continued until 10 o'clock Thursday morning. When seen Wednesday, Wednes-day, Dr. Stewart ald that he could add nothing that would throw any light upon the case. Ho believes that the man may have been In the water for several weeks, and Is Inclined to tho opinion that It is a case of suicide, basing this view upon tho fact that tho weapon was held cIoho enough to the hend at tho timo tho wound was received to cause powder marks upon the ekln. The body while It lay In Evans's morgue was Ispected by many persons, but none had nnv recollection of having seen the victim before. Oltlcers who are familiar with this class of cases are Inclined to believe be-lieve that the man was tdmply a strange laborer who became tired of life, destroyed de-stroyed all his papers and then committed suicide. |
