Show ST. JOHN ILL IE TRIED FOR MURDER Coloradoan Accused of Conspiracy Conspir-acy in Riots at Smuggler-Union Smuggler-Union Mine. TELLURIDE, Colo., March 22. Vincent St. John, president ot the Minors' union at Burke, Ida., who wns brought to Colorado Colo-rado from Boise on requisition to answer an-swer to the charge of being implicated In a conspiracy to murder Ben Burnnm, was today bound ovor without ball to the Dlntrfot court. Burnnm wan killed in the labor riots at the Smuggler-Union mlno on July 3t 1901. At that time SL John was prosldent of tho local miners' union, which Is affiliated with lhc Western Federation of Miners- Before the hearing of tho testimony today, to-day, attorneys for St. John filed a motion for a change of venue, charging that Justice M. L. Brown was not qualllled to sit uo an examining magistrate because of his former relations with the Cltlzons' nlltanco nnd Mine-Owners' association. This motion was denied and Justlco Brown took occasion to refute the charges of favoritism made against him Testimony of neurly a score of persons was taken, all saying that St John was present at or soon after tho battle In which Burnam was killed, nnd a WTltten agreement signed by tho assistant man- nger of tho mine and SL John, arranging for a truce, was also offered in cvi- IH dencc. |
