Show KING OF MOOSE ISLAND DEAD Dog Watched All Night at Hole in Ice Whero He Fell. BANGOR. Me., Dec. 11. The body of old John Cusack, the "Hermit King" of Mooso island, ln Moosohead lake, hns been found. Ho waa drowned Monday Rftornoon by breaking through tho ice within fifteen roda of tho shore. Nothing was known of tho accident until un-til a man living on the shoro opposite the Island saw a small dog on the Ice, noting ln a peculiar manner. As tho dog remained In the same spot for some hours, an Investigation was made, and it was found that tho animal was Intently watching a holo in tho ice, which ho refused re-fused to leave. It was found that Cusack had not been in his hovel since Monday morning, when ho left It on a trip to Greenville. The dog had watched at tho hole all night. Men grappled through tho hole ln the Ice and recovered tho body. John Cusack was about TO years old. He was known for thirty years or longer ns tho King of Moose Island, of which ho was owner and solo resident. He lived by farming, log driving and guiding, and was ono of tho most peculiar characters In Maine. His expertness with rlflo and paddle and ns a performer of daring icats on logs In rough water were known everywhere. Disappointed in love early In life, ho retired re-tired to Mooso Island and there lived with no companion oxcept a dog.
