Show froze to Death . Lashed to Mast Schooner Montana Stranded Off Capo Hatteras During Heavy Northerly North-erly Gale, NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 11. Tho three-masted three-masted schooner Montana, Capt. Booge, from New York for Charleston, S. C, with a cargo of salt or coal, stranded at 11 o'clock last night at Pea Island, N. C, life saving station, fifty miles north of Capo Hattoras, during a heavy northorly gale. Within twenty minutes after tho vessel stranded she was full of water and awash so that the crew, consisting of Cant. Boyco and six men, wero forced to tako to the rigging, whoro they remained until un-til this aftornoon. when tiix of the soven men wero rescued by crews of Pea Island, New Inlet and Bodies Island life saving stations. Ono man. Henry Edwards, was Jrozon to death and was lashed to tho rigging in such a mannor that he could not bo rcachod. and his body Is still aboard tho nhlp, hanging in the rigging head downward. down-ward. Ono other man of tho crow was almost dead from oxpoauro and exhaustion when ho waB rescued by tho membors of the llfo saving crows, but probably will recover, re-cover, although his condition Is sorlous. Tho roscucd crow are now at tho Pea Island life saving station. Great difficulty was experienced In landing tho crow owing to tho fact that tho vessel had aunk and a heavy sea was running at tho time. Tho freezing weather hampered tho work of rescue and tho seamen wero so ovorcomo by exposuro and exhaustion that only two of tho men In the rigging wore abjo to assist in hauling haul-ing tho whipllnc aboard the vessel. Again and again tho line was shot out sond ono by ono tho men wore takon oft the ship In tho brcechos buoy, after a most harrowing experience of moro than thlrtcc hours epont In tho rigging of the sinking vessel In a temperature much below freezing. Their clothing was coated coat-ed with thick layers of Ice. Tho vessel will be a total loss. It Is understood that tho Montana Is owned In Sommers Point. N. J. Tho Montana was a vessel of 33J tons net, was built at Bath. Mo., In 1SS9, and was owned by J. T. Boovc of Sommers Point, N J. |
