Show Children on the Stage. Speaking of the frequent arrest by factory fac-tory inspectors of chlldron playing on tho stnge, C. E. Kohl of tho Chicago opera-house opera-house has this to say: "Wo do not book children in our theaters thea-ters unless an act positively requires It, which Is comparatively seldom, but It seems absurd to mo that a law designed to protect children from the slavery and abuso of sweatshops, coll lories and factories fac-tories should be distorted to cover tho carefully protected and even pampered children who spend a fow moments every day on a well-conducted stage. "As a rulo, no children could bo belter cared for than thoy are. Their work Is usually very light, and If they aro attractive at-tractive for any reason tho selfish Inter ests of their guardians. If no other motive, would protect them from any hardships. On tho dramatic stage chlldron occasionally occasion-ally appear ln a brief scene requiring no exertion, as thoy have with Josoph Jefferson, Jeffer-son, James A. Heme, Chauncey Olcott and a host of others." |
