Show PLURAL MARRIAGE WAS KN8WN. So It appears from the testimony of Reed Smoot that a case of plural marriage mar-riage was within the knowledge of tho authorities of the church In 1902. In that year Jesse Knight told Reod Smoot that Benjamin Cluff, president of tho Brlgham Young university, had takon a new plural wife In the person of the daughter of George Reynolds. All this was known to tho apostolic council. It was all known to the editor of the Deseret News. Benjamin Cluff continued for more than a year thereafter as president of tho Brlghant Toung university; and when h was removed after the agitation agita-tion of the Smoot caso compelled his removal, he was succeeded by a man who was living with a plural wife. And all this time tho Deseret News a.nd Borne of the authorities of tho churcn have been lying to Gentiles and Mormons, saying that no such caso existed, saying that any ouch caso would be prosecuted within tho church; saying that the stories told by Gentiles Gen-tiles concerning new plural marriages were wicked falsehoods, uttered to malign ma-lign and for the purpose of arousing persecution against God'8 elect people. Before this Smoot investigation gets through no matter what may happen to the apostle and his political ambitions ambi-tions Gentiles and Mormons alike will get some Idea of the manner In which mendacity has been the dally dole from the hierarchy and Its organ to the people. |
