Show -) WHAT REPENTANCE MEANS TO SINNERS Very Interesting; Is the personality of tho Rev. Archdeacon J. R, Mathews, who Is conducting the mission services at SL Paul's church this week. For some years he was in the Church Army in England, and in ilanchester, where he "was born, he worked for a long time with the Salvation Army. Then, after that, he was for a year and a half working with the late Dwlght L. Moody In Chicago. This was in the notorious times of the Windy City, when many places were unsafe for unarmed pedestrians pedes-trians even in daytime. Archdeacon Mathews has many interesting experiences experi-ences from his various missions. His sermon last night was a strong lesson on the real meaning and the great necessity for, tho true value of repentance. "Repentance is not weeping over one's sins. Many a man weeps bitterly over sins that he has no Intention of leaving oft. Repentance is not merely prayer, for there are many who pray for sins that they cherish. Repentance is not sorrow, for many are sorry for alns that they have, but which they commit again at the first opportunity. The real repentance is all of these, but with them the earnest resolve to turn from all sins, to endeavor to do the opposite op-posite to the wrong that one has been going." Among the congregation last night were the Very Rev. Dean Eddie and the church wardens of St, Mark's cathedral. ca-thedral. There will be services again this evening. |
