Freshmen Carry Off tho Honors With Ease Because of Faithful Faith-ful Training-. . Freshmen (winners) 53 points Preps 27 points Juniors , 17 points Sophomores P. points FRESHMEN athletes covered themselves them-selves with glory yesterday and won out easily in tho annual class track meet which was pulled off at tho University campus. The freshmen worked, and that's the whole explanation of their victory. Over a month ago their manager, A. C. Scranton, called all freshmen together, to-gether, and at that time strong men were (selected to competo In every event. Since then every freshman has worked steadily and consistently, and their faithful labors wero rewarded by yesterday's magnificent victory. The day was by no means an ideal one Xor a track meet. Tho cold mountain brcczo which blow straight against tho track was a matter of no llttlo concern to the sprinters, who would havo equaled some records under moro favorablo weather conditions. Some Good Sprints. The sprint races wcro the features of the meet. Tho men were all pretty evenly matched and It was anybody's victory until un-til after the raco was over. In tho lOJ-yard lOJ-yard dash Pitt not the freshmen wild by beating out Spenser and Parko and winning win-ning first placo In the fair tlmo of 11 seconds. sec-onds. Tho 220 yards was tho event of the day. Pitt and Parko did considerable Jockeying and wero both set back a cou-plo cou-plo of yards before finally getting off. The runners finally got off, and then It was a caso of nip and tuck every inch of the way. Parko wn boxed on tho turn and Pitt, by a clever piece of head work, seized tho polo. Down the stretch they came with Pitt leading, followed closely by Sponsor nnd Butlor. Pitt shot over the tapo a winner In tho good tlmo of 23 seconds. sec-onds. The relay was amusing rather than exciting. Tho rcshmcn had tho game down to a science and won out easily. Dell Judd captured everything In the longdistance long-distance races. In tho half-mile ho captured cap-tured first, but was followed closely by Clayton. Tho freshmen mado a dcBperato attempt to capture the mllo and came well-nigh doing It. Freshman Brown put up a hard fight and led right to tho finish, when Judd, amid tho wildest excitement, shot ahead of him for a victory. In tho field events tho . freshmen had things about as much their own was as on tho track. They captured all three places In tho broad Jump, two places in the polo vault, two In the high Jump and ono place In both the hammmer and shot. The pole vault, always a spectacular affair, af-fair, was rendered really dramatic by tho dangerous airy lllghtB of the mighty Oscar Carlson, who captured second place. Carlson Carl-son added another feather to hkn cap by winning tho high Jump. In this event Anderson, a young prep, did somo creditable credit-able work and gives promise of becoming a winner.
