Show PLAN TO RAISE THE LAKE. A special dispatch In The Tribune yesterday yes-terday morning referred to a letter from Mr. John E. Dooly of this city, to Senator Kearns, relative to an Improvement in the Great Salt Lake. The plan referred lo was designed to raise the level of the lake, and the idea was to have it referred to the Geological Survey (which was done), for investigation. The plan is that of a French engineer, which Mr. Dooly had put Into, form a number of years ago,- and which has become much more feasible with the fall of-the lake than it was at the time it was conceived. In brief, tho plan is to dyke off the eastern portion of the lake, where all the inflow occurs, with a view of thus making of it a fresh water lake. This would bo accomplished by building build-ing a dyke from the Promontory to Fremont Island, thence to Antelopo island, is-land, and from the southern point of Antelope iob.uul to the mainland south-cast. south-cast. The largo inflow of fresh water, it is estimated, would before many years make tho eastern arm of the lake a fresh water lake, the salt marsh lands of Davis and Weber counties would become fresh, and would be fcr-tllo fcr-tllo to the water's edge. The dykes to be put In would hold the water at a reasonably constant stage, higher than the present level; as tho surfece rone, the water would flow over into the western or main body of the lake, carrying with It every year a 'considerable portion of salt and alkali now carried in the waters, the shoreline, shore-line, and the bottom of this part of, the lajjc aa It Is at present, gradually freshening fresh-ening tho whole. This entire scheme was fully presented pre-sented In Tho Tribune of December 20th last, with a map showing the lake, the line of railroad over the Promontory, Promon-tory, tho cut-off, and the proposed dykes. It looks like a feasible proposition, proposi-tion, -and wo are glad that the Government Govern-ment engineers have been directed to Inquire Into it. done, was one of decided gloom. It la fortunate that thin view proves to have been Incorrect, fortunate alike for the-youthful the-youthful offenders and for the State. |
