Arbor day was universally uni-versally observed by the colleges and schools of Logan. At tho. A. C, B. Y. C, N. J, A. and district schools appropriate exorcises were rendered, followed by tree-planting, tree-planting, Tho afternoon was devoted to sports. At the A. C. tho annual department track meet took place and was won by the engineersscore en-gineersscore 42 points to 3S points. The events and winners wero as follows: 40-yard dash won by R. iL Reader, timo fi seconds. Ray Fenn second, W. R. Smith third. 40-yard hurdles T. Allred and J. W. Phillips tied -for first place, time, 6 2-6 seconds, sec-onds, dividing the points. 220-yard dash W. R. Smith won; tlme; 26 3-5 seconds; R. IL Reader second. 440-yard run-Won by J. W. Phillips in CO seconds. SSO-yard run Won by Frank Thatcher; time. 3 minutes; J. II. ArchlDald second, M. J. Connelly third. Onc-mllo run Won by Charles Daxley; time, 5 minutes 34 4-5 seconds; C. A. During the Arbor day sports the flro bell pealed forth and the firomcn responded respond-ed and performed valient services fighting iho flames, which woro doing away with Oscar Bjorkmaa's barn in tho Seventh ward. Tho entire structure was burned, tho firo having too good a hold when tho flrc-tlghtcra arrived. All vehicles and anU mals wero removed, tho loss being confined con-fined to the structure Itself nnd about two 1 tons of hay. The flro was the result of a small boy playing with matches, and netted a loss of $300. |
