H will be like returning home when Charlea. Schlacka goes back to the Den-ver Den-ver & Rio Grande, a road orer which he formerly presided as. assistant general manager. He grew up on the system and all his knowledge of railroading was obtained on that road. His father was Henry Schlacks, the mechanical superintendent of the Rio Grande. an-I was taken there by E. T. Jeffrey when the latter oamc to Denver from the Illinois Il-linois Central. Youn Schlacks had been given a technical education and , knew all about n locomotive when betook be-took a clerkship under Mr. Jeffrey and. like his father, moved to the Rio Grande when Mr. Jeffrey did. It was not long before the young man, having served an apprenticeship at the various benches In the shops, was given a chance In the operating department and In a short time was made assistant gn. eral manager, a position he relinquished relinquish-ed to accept the general management of the Colorado Midland when a half of that road's stock became the property of the Rio Grande. Since then he has been the personal reprtsentatlve of the owners on the Midland and now he will directly represent President Jeffrey of the Rio Grande system In Colorado. Pic is a pleasant man to meet and will no doubt 1111 the position with credit to himself and to the betterment of tho system. His Jurisdiction of course will take In the Rio Grande Western. The supposition Is that Mr. Schlacks will retain his Midland position and that his new duties will be largely executive. ex-ecutive. Mr. Edson remaining ut tho head of the operating department of the Rio Grande. Such a plan Is more than likely as Mr. Edson has done so much for his department and his pluce would be hard to fill Indeed. |
