Wyo-ming by the I survey along I these lines I than In any othe of the Western States for the reaton one of the officials offi-cials DC the survey says more requests have cpme from that State and Its representatives In Congress have been more urgent than otheis to have the survey extend ItsoperationsIn Wyo mlng BIG HORN SURVEY Among other matters accomplished In Wyoming during tho last year by the survey was a survey of a reser 1 vqir site on the Gray Bull river in the Big Horn bnSfn This work was done by A Parshall Assistant State Engineer En-gineer of Wyoming who has cargo of stream measurements and other work of the geological survey In the State Mr Parshall discovered and made a I preliminary survey of a reservoir reser-voir and estimates for Its construction His report will be made the basis of an amendment to ba pronqspd by Senator Sen-ator Warren to one of the appropriation appropria-tion bills providing funds for constructing con-structing a reservoir at expense ex-pense on the site surveyed GREEN RIVER WATERS Late in the season at tile request oC Senator Warren an examination of a project for diverting the head waters of Green river and Newfolk onto a large tract of hind l In southwestern Fremont county Wyoming The examination ex-amination was made by C H Fitch of the survey Who reports that the streams mimed contain < < an ample supply sup-ply of water for successfully irrigating irrigat-ing an Immense area of now useless desert lands A series of natural lakes or stbrage reservoirs exists on the benches above these desert Jands which Mr Fitch believes can be filled yin the spring from the flood waters of Green river and Newfolk and which will serve Irrigate the lands In question during the succeeding dry season l A complete survey of the necessary Irrigation Irri-gation works and the cost of establishing estab-lishing them will be made by the sur voy during this year IN THE NORTHEAST In northeastern Wyoming Mr N II Darton with a corps of engineers has been investigating the coal gas and oil reservoirs of the Black Hills district in Weston and Crook counties The region re-gion named In addition to Its known coai deposits has all the surfacesjjidi catlons of oil and natural gas Some years ago a number of wells were sunk In the vicinity of Newcastle and while oil was reached by some of them It was not In sufficient quantity to make It profitable to market The work of Mr Dayton has been performed with the view of determining the location of oilbearing strata and tills Willbo Indicated upon the topographic map which will be published with the report re-port Mr Darton baa also during the year made an investigation of the Hay creek coal fields near Sundance and Inyan Kara Wyo These new coalfields coal-fields will be indicated on the map to bo published so that the Information secured by 1 the survey may be available lo the public A very elaborate mineral min-eral survey has been made by Mr Dar ton of the Hartvllle region In Laramie county Wyo The Iron ores found there are oC superior quality and the survey made of the district Indicates that the supply Is extensive and will undoubtedly last a long time There are also good copper gold and sliver prospects in the district I UNDERGROUND WATERS A general Inspection has been made by the survey of the underground water wa-ter possibilities of eastern Wyoming It has been found that flowing ar l9slan l wells can be secured boring to reasonable depths In some portions of the district examined In other portions por-tions pumping wells are necessary The examination has established the fact that large areas of the land in this portion of Wyoming can be bettered by systematic wellboring An examination of the North Platte In Carbon county has been made for the purpose of locating reservoir sites without encouraging results COLORADO SURVEYS In Colorado an examination of the South Platte has been made 1J r a ° m by a corps of engineers In charge of Mr A L Fellows Several reservoir sites have been selected and estimates made of the cost of reservoir construction Surveys Sur-veys have bqen made along the Rio Grande In Colorado and New Mexico by Philip E llarronnd and five reservoir reser-voir sites located It Is the Intention of the survey to increase its wock in Colorado this year Surveys will be made of a nronosed nlan of taklncr wa water from the Grand and Gunnison rivers for diversion to the Uncom ° pahgre valley with the view of irri1 gntlnj large areas of land now regarded regard-ed as desert In all of the Western Status the work of the survey will be in accordance with the requests made for its service Several States have ap proprintcd J small sums to the use of their agricultural colleges order that they may cooperate with the survey and this plan has been found to be or great advantage to the Spates so doing do-ing Mr F IL Newell chief hydrographcr of the survey In speaking recently of the work of the survey said lOll Is our alii to furnish the public all the Information It desires sji far as we maybe may-be able to obtain it with tho means at our command of the Irrigation possibilities possi-bilities the volume of water supply of tlie streams the mineral Indications and all such like data of the material resources of the country And ingoing thlo we are guided by he requests of those interested HAMILTON S v OUT
