to Los Angeles Tho fruition of our dreams is near Let us rejoice I On this inaugural day when the past and present and future events of our beloved State are passing before us as a panorama let us not forget that in the grandest measure we are realizing realiz-ing within tho generation in which their work was performed the fruits of the labors ahd the fullness of the hopes of the bravo and hardy pioneers of Utah When fiftythree years ago they left the solitudes which everywhere every-where prevailed between the frontier I on the Missouri river and the narrow strip of civilization on the Pacific coast there was nothing at any point to encourage en-courage sustain or give hope Their final resting place where we now stand was in many respects less promising and in no respect less forbidding for-bidding than any other But they were looking above and beyond the time and place which enveloped them a hope and a faith a courage and a strength which could have found sustenance only in a stern and Inflexible reliance upon other agencies and other days was theirs and thus their trials and sorrows their hardships and Josses were futile as means of discouragement Through the rifts In the clouds of adversity they saw the star of empire shining brightly and amid the wailing and the discord of the tempests they heard the still small voice bidding them not despair but be of good hope for they were not living and laboring in vain Many of them have passed I to a higher and greater reward and cannot be with us to share In the festivities fes-tivities and rejoicing over the bounties blessings and benefits of these days But their work was well done and we but celebrate the completion of thee the-e lfice of which they laid the foundation founda-tion and which indeed they prosecuted to the very finishing May we be able at all times to perform our duties with as much ability and regard for those who are to follow us as they performed theirs May their names and deeds be ever kept illumined and their memories L be ever green unto the end of time that they may be always and everywhere recognized as fittingly among thoso of Tho few tho Immortal ones That were not born to die Mav our cherished commonwealth as she advances along the line of political po-litical social and industrial development develop-ment continue to be equal as in the past to every requirement made upon her resources and willing In the performance per-formance of every duty May we in like manner progress improve and fit ourselves In all respects for the obligations obliga-tions as well as the privileges which may be given us With heart filled with pride for birth and citizenship In our beloved Utah I now take up with a deep consciousness I con-sciousness of Its responsibilities the
