Show ANOTHER INCENDIARY AT- I TEMPT. I A very bold and daring attempt was made about 3 o'clock this morning to 6et lire to McLcod's New iTork bakery, south C street, Virginia, next door north of McGurn's well known family grocery and provision store. The incendiary in-cendiary entered the rear door, which j was open, piled a lot of rags saturated , with coal oil on top of a box against the wall, not far from the door, set it blazing, and left it in a hurry. Three men were sleeping in the room. Two were employes, and slept in bunks at the east end of the room, next to the partition of tho front or salesroom of ; the bakery. McLeod himself was I sleeping on a side bench or table at the j north side of the room, and tho fire I was kindled not two yards from the soles of his feet. The sudden blazing ! light awakened him and he sprang to the floor. The firo had run up the ! side of the wall and was rapidly becom-1 ing formidable. McLeod promptly dashed a few buckets of water upon the flames, from a barrel stauding near by, and was fortunate in putting out the incipient conflagration. Had it got fairly started, there is no knowing where it would have ended, for all the buildings around there aro of wood, built closely together. Somebody seems determined to burn that neighborhood, neigh-borhood, this being the third unmistakable unmis-takable attempt made within the last three weeks. What the motive can bo we are not prepared to say, but sundry motives aro suspected, and the infernal scoundrel who is trying his hand at it may get a bullet thmnak bis worthless body, or his neck in a sling sooner than he antipipates, Gold Hill Nacs. |
