Show UTAH. ! In its comment:? on the President's message, the Washington Capital un- ' der the heading "Utah" saj: j The n'Sl point of interest that treats one to tin agreeable surprise Ls His Excellency's reference to the polygamous poly-gamous lollovcrs of Brighaui. The pioui horror with which the ad minis- ; (ration approaches and treats this evil has always been to us a matter of amusement. With no end of immor- ; ality, to ue the mildest term, at our j national capital, and mildewing tho civil service throughout the country, 1 our government is terribly distressed over the practices of a few bigoted, ! ignorant people, that we all know must j disappear of itself before the steady I march of Clui.-tian civilization. But ! some of these have been tried and ; punished, and the heart of the administration admin-istration is softened. It now recommends recom-mends that for the benefit of the help- ! less and innocent issue of these poly- j gamous people, the marriages should i be legalized. This is choice. The law so far has abstained carefully, as it ; ! was bound to, from recognizing the ; i evil. We doubt whether a more I ! shocking proposition could be made. I And it exhibits the confused and blind : manner in which the whole subjeet has been treated by tho government. The prosecutions gotten up have been carried on. not only without regard to all legality, but in its manner so conducted con-ducted as to bring the law itself into contempt. The jnries have been packed openly and with boasting, while the vicious ignorance of the judges has covered the whole affair with infamy far worse than the evil it sought to arrest. Bismarck and Sunday. The prime minister of the North German States, count Bismarck, some years ago, learning learn-ing that work was carried on on his estate on Sunday wrote to the steward, "This Sunday work must stop." His steward answered: "The people cannot can-not do otherwise. They are obliged to work all the week on the estate of your excellency, and so have no timo except Sunday to work in their own field and garden patches." Bismarck replied: "I do not want God robbed on my estate, es-tate, therefore other arrangements must be made. If any of my laborers have a field of their own to till, or if their grain is ripe and must be harvested, harvest-ed, they come first, and not I. But Sunday work must cease." |
