Show WORKING FOR PRATT Deputy Sheriff Who Is Helping a Republican V DEMOCRATS DISGRUNTLED I RUMOR THAT CLARK WILL NOT APPOINT PRATT V No More Federal Offices for Utah Until Un-til the Mew Year Postmaster Will Hold Until June The Waterworks Department Other V Political Mews members of There are a great many the Democratic party in this city who are of the opinion that it is the duty of Sheriff Lewis to inform Boman Cannon Can-non that he would best serve the interests in-terests of the county by refraining from any further advocacy of Arthur Pratt or any other man for that matter mat-ter for the position of chief of police Mr Cannon is a Republican enjoying enjoy-ing office under a Democratic administration adminis-tration He declined to assist the party in the campaign last month by contribution contri-bution and now when the Democrats have carried the city council by a good safe majority he is lending his efforts to aid a Republican for the place There many good Democrats out of work who would make just as good sheriffs deputies and there is a well defined opinion among members of the party that in creating a vacancy in his place and giving some deserving competent man his official shoes the sheriff would be doing something which would go a long ways toward establishing estab-lishing his popularity with the party Mr Pratt is still working for the office of-fice That he is having a hard row to hoe is evident He will have to take another tack very soon for it was stated yesterday that Mayorelect Clark might reconsider his idea of appointing ap-pointing him at all and at the suggestion sugges-tion of friends had determined it would be best for him to send in the name of some other good man Mr Clark so it is said does not desire to antagonize the people in his administration but wants to make a good record He has been told that Pratts selection means a season of turmoil and trouble and desires to evade any action which would embroil him with the city council coun-cil in giving the city a good economical economi-cal government In the event of the selection of another an-other man nothing is said as to who he will be but there are several inline in-line for the place He will doubtless be a compromise candidate and will not have been a bitter partisan in either way As to changes in the force I it is stated there will be few the new administration being in favor of keeping keep-ing competent men engaged in police duty The force is small and to takeoff I take-off experienced men and substitute green hands would be to cripple it In the matter of the chief of the fire department Devine has several people working in his interest but the Pratt faction is not doing him any good having as stated yesterday concluded con-cluded to abandon him in order that their attention might be strictly confined con-fined to the police department And therre the matter stands up to date The opposition to Mr Pratt is not to the gentleman personally But a McKinley Mc-Kinley Republican can hardly expect Democrats to support him politically Another point urged is the fact that he has held office for so long and his apparent ap-parent determination to keep right on |
