| Show I WAR EAGLE GOLD Satisfactory Showing In the Old Cumberland Mine An Avalanche reporter visited the Cumberland mine on War Eagle mountain last Saturday This property says the Avalanche of Silver City Ida is being worked under a lease and bond secured about Sept 1 last by Messrs Sonnemann Branscombe of Spokane The Cumberland formerly known as the Crane Driggs was one of the earliest locations made on the mountain and was opened by a shaft to a depth of about 120 feet at the time of its discovery In 1870 Messrs Bruce Bros operated the mine and took out consdierable ore from which they realized about 60 per ton They worked through the shaft and the adit tunnel south of the shaft Subsequently Subse-quently the property came into the hands of Messrs James and Thomas Shaw who have operated it on a small scale for some 15 years past occasionally occasion-ally milling a small lot of high grade ore sufficient to meet all expenses of mining and giving the owners spending spend-ing money for the long winter months spent in recreation and idleness I When the present operators bonded the mine it was developed by a tunnel I about 350 feet in length and a winze 1 from this tunnel about 60 feet deep The old shaft previously mentioned had long since been filled up by wash from the hillside above contracts Con-tracts were immpdiately awarded for cleaning out this old shaft and for sinking another winze from the adit I level between the one spoken of and the old shaft In opening the shaft the lessees found a strong vein exposed ex-posed from the surface to the sump and about a foot of good grade ore the entire distance This discovery was almost wholly unexpected upon their part for while common report informed in-formed them that such was the case they had long since lost all faith in fairy tales of rich ore left standing in old workings The showing was so encouraging however that steps were immediately taken to open the property prop-erty upon a scale commensurate with its worth and a hoisting plant and other supplies were immediately ordered order-ed and a shaft house boarding house office and other buildings erected Mr Stanley A Easton a mining man of I known ability was put in charge of the property by the lessees and work has since been prosecuted with all dispatch I patch I At the time of our visit the new I hoisting plant was in operation and everything made snug for winter work I The are chute has been proven for a dietJince of about 100 feet in length I and 100 feet in depth and its value is such that the management has no hesitancy in saying that it is more than satisfied with the property and I Avill push work vigorously They are now sinking the shaft with three eighthour shifts and will send it to the I 300 mark as rapidly as possible Stations Sta-tions will be cut every 100 feet and from the second level down drifts Avill I be run on the vein both north and I south At the first level the north drift will be extended uth under the I adit tunnel and connections made with the winzes from that level and I the ore blocked out for sloping About 120 men are now on timI pay roll and Ave were informed that the force would be increased as rapidly as room was made in the mine Ore cars and track iron are now en route for use in the lower levels of the mine The adit tunnel is being extended south and the face of the same which has been in barren ground for some time is now entering another body of ore which gives promise of equaling the other chute Speaking of the ore found standing in the old shaft Mr Sonnemann stated to our reporter that the showing was almost incredible that they have sampled the vein from the sump to the surface and that they had failed to secure an assay below 50 mostly in gold The hoisting plant is a 12horse power Hercules gasoline engine and is giving splendid satisfaction The shaft has been put in fine shape being fitted with guide rails and a crosshead used with the bucket |
