11t1 ever rumors ru-mors of fusion of political parties bred confusion it has done so in Idaho Asa As-a reiut half of the political leaders are canding on their heads I view of this rncertainty a to what parties niayjoin hanGs in the strife for supremacy su-premacy the people are prepared for 1 most any kind of a lining up in the next campaign And though the leaders j lead-ers are and doubtless will be for sometime some-time entirely at sea they premise to bring from the apparently calamitous chaos combinations that will prove a revelation even to the father of fusion In this potpourri of FIGHT AGAINST PERRAULT It is whispered about that Joseph Perrault who was recently appointed surveyor general for Idaho the duties SUneyO general of which office he some time since as aimed will have to make a fight Tori confirmation I is al < = o stated that owincr to the lack of interest taken in 4 his case by Senator Shoup he feels S constrained to b present in Washington Washing-ton when his case comes up The objection to Mr Perrault is being urged principally by State Engineer F J Mills Mr Mills it seems during the campaign made promises to the ef feet that if a Republican surveyor gen fec eral went into office no contracts would be let to outsiders the engineers of this state having vigorously protested against contracts for Idaho surveys going to Oregon Just before the retirement re-tirement of exSurveyor General Straughan some heavy contracts were prepared to be let to B A Robb of Portland When Mr Perrault took charge Mr Mills filed a protest against the approval of the contracts but it is said Mr Perrault refused to give i his endorsement g This greatly angered Mr Mills who at once set about to prevent Mr Per vaults confirmation Among other things i will be urged that Mr Per rault is not a practical surveyor Alleged Al-leged nepotism and the dismissal of clerks who claim the protection of the civil service may be made side issues Much will depend upon the attitude of Senator Shoup The senator had selected another General Pettit for the I position of surveyor general but Mr I Perraults prestige by reason of the fact that he was chairman of the state committee coupled with protests against General Pettit who held the I position under Harrison moved Shoup to recommend Perrault I may be fairly assumed however that the senator i sen-ator will be found defending the appointment pointment t The outcome of the protest of the clerks dismissed by Mr Perrault is awaited with a good deal of interest i Mr Perrault claims as these clerks were taken in by presidential extension 1 exten-sion of the civil service never having undergone examination they are entitled S en-titled to no recognition and as there is no eligible list to select from in this class he is at liberty to appoint whom he desires Much interest naturally attaches to the decision of the commission attches mission in these cases n I STEUNENBERG FOR SENATOR I is gossip here that Governor Steu jienberg is being groomed for the senatorial sen-atorial race three years hence His friends believe he is in every way qualified to in a seat in the United S States senate and they are credited with having already commenced the work of mapping out a vigorous campaign cam-paign in his behalf In the meantime the governor pursues the even tenor of his way giving the people a splendid administration The people generally may not know that Idahos executive is in a fair way ito i-to become a wealthy He has we3lh man given giv-en considerable attention to mining interests in-terests of late and i is said that he has identified himself with some of the 4 most promising properties of the state t and is in a fair way to make for himself r him-self a snug little fortune S i4 I there ever was a man who deserved de-served success it is Idahos present I governor Not many people know i t but it Is a fact that when Governor Steunenberg came to Idaho he was distressing S dis-tressing pool Some say he came into the state in a box car being too j 1 1 I I poor to purchase a ticket all the way I from his Iowa home With his brother I A K Steunenberg at present one of Caldwells leading bankers he started I a little impel at Caldwell By dint of hard work they managed to build up I a nice business and in about 1 years j from the time they arrived 4n Idaho poverty stricken from the east one I was in the gubernatorial chair and the I other at the head of a thriving banking j institution Not a bad record and won I 1 honestly On the result of next summers Democratic I Dem-ocratic or DemocraticPopulist convention con-vention depends the governors political politi-cal future Like all vigorous men he I has made many enemies politically who will fight him bitterly Should he fail to secure a renomination and it would I not be at all surprising his senatorial boom might be found to be so badly punctured as to completely collapse it COZIERS APPOINTMENT The appointment of R V Cazier to be United States district attorney has raised a howl A good many Republicans Repub-licans thought the place should have gone to John T Morrison who had the temerity to run for congress on the McKinley ticket last fall but Mr Cazier was speaker of the house when Senator Shoup was elected and as such rendered valuable service in the advancement ad-vancement of the senators campaign REX
