Show I HADA V A CLOSE GALL Wreck On the Switch Near Huslers Mill V AIR BRAES DID NOT WORK AIL OF THE PASSENGERS ESCAPED ES-CAPED WITHOUT INJURY One However Was Badly Burned V While Taking a Plash Light Photograph of the Scene Only Damage to the Rolling Stock Was to the Engine Enge I The train crews and passengers on the Oregon Short Line that met in collision at Huslers mill switch about colsion mi four miles south of Salt Lake last night thought for a brief period that their doom had come but fortunately the mishap was unaccompanied with any disastrous consequences The up train due in the city at 620 from the south bearing Mercur Tintic and Provo passengers stopped at the switch to let the 6 p m southbound train pass The incoming train had the right of way and was coming to a standstill Along came the train from the opposite direction I should have pulled on to the siding Instead however how-ever of slowing down to let the brakeman brake-man get off to turn the switch the southbound express sped along the main track Almost before it was known what was going to happen there was a terrific shaking up of everyone ev-eryone on both trains Engine 214 bunted into No 212 with a mighty force but beyond disabling both locomotives I loco-motives concern the wreck was of no great THE AIR DID NOT WORK The cause of the collision was due to the failure of the air brakes to work although the engineer says he tested the apparatus before leaving the Salt Lake depot and then it worked satisfactorily When he saw the collision col-lision was bound to occur he reversed and sounded the whistle but there was so little time to avert the smash that the concussion was minimized to only a slight degree This was No 214s first trip since coming from the repair shops As luck would have it not a singly person on either train was injured Of course the passengers were thoroughly shaken up and the train crews got in some dangerous positions but all escaped wounds of a serious or very painful nature RELIEF CAME QUICKLY As soon a possible word was telephoned tele-phoned in from the flour mill and within about an hour a relief engine came to the scene of the wreck The passengers were transferred and brought to the city arriving at about 8 oclock The wreckaged engines were towed back to the master mechanics hospital and the southbound south-bound train was sent V out a few minutes min-utes later V FLASH LIGHT ACCIDENT V Indirectly the collision was the cause of a very painful accident to one of the passengers On the Incoming train from Mercur was a quartette of gentlemen gen-tlemen consisting of J R Walker jr C H Griffin Frank Harris and R A Wood the latter of Mercur While the crowd was viewing the wrecked locomotives locked in each others embrace I em-brace Mr Harris bethought himself to take a snap shot at the novel sight The land office receiver got out his kodak and adjusted it and Mr Wood was called upon to set off the magnesium mag-nesium powder which produces the flash light used in photography I The powder was heaped on a coal shovel and Mr Wood applied the lighted match at the same time protesting pro-testing that the stuff should be spread out Mr Wood was in a stooping attitude at-titude and before he was prepared to retreat the powder ignited The brilliant liant flash came and with i the match man received a severe injury to his right hand the four fingers of which were oar cooked as it were to the bone In addition Mr Wood received an uncomfortable amount of flame in his eyes but this latter injury in-jury will be only of temporary nature na-ture Fortunately f Wood had some vaseline in his grip to apply to his hands until the Knutsford hotel was reached when Druggist Gilds applied ap-plied soothing and proper remedies Mr Woods fingers are very severely i burned and it will be several weeks before comfort he and will satisfaction be able to use them with |
