their positions by a vote of the audience au-dience President Wilford Woodruff was the first speaker His text was from the saying of Jesus Straight is the gate and narrow Is the way that leads to eternal etern-al life and few there be that so therein This he said should cause people to reflect If only those who had received the mission of Joseph Smith and passed through the ordinances of Gods house were to receive the celestial slory tho number of the exalted would be very few indeed a merit handful among the many millions of the worlds population Satan warfare was being waged against the sons of Adam and it appeared that few would survive until the end The Saints should realize the brevity of their existence here and seek to earn exaltation by doing all the duties which the Lord required I The speaker believed there was no I earthly pleasure which would justify toe Saints In jeapordizing their right to tne blessings which are in store for the righteous right-eous Preaching the gospel was one of the greatest privileges as well as the greatest pleasures which men could enjoy The Saints should not be deterred by the ridicule of the world but spend their das in making their calling and election sure President Woodruff referred to early days and said that no one except b > the power r > t God could have accomplished what Joseph Smith and Brigham Youn achieved Apostle Brigham Young then addressed the Saints He said the Saints shoiiid c grateful for President Woodruffs m > rd which were dictated by the spirit of revelation and truth His life had been preserved for a purpose for it appear > i that no other man could have guided tile good ship Zion as he had done When Joseph Smith came to the world i all the prevalent denominations 4 Christiandom were wrong and God es tablished the true kingdom through iu humble prophet Now all people are offered of-fered the boon of eternal life if they will be obedient to the teachings which God gave to the world through his servant and those who have succeeded him in thi church President George Q Cannon who followed fol-lowed believed the Saints should bo grateful for the wonderful organization which had been established in the church The Saints received inspiration and truth without paying for it and without worry big about their pews Provision had beta made for the poor and there were per hars none in the church now who were in want and suffering People today are often distrustful ol the priesthood said President Cannon instead of appreciating it as they should The Saints should realize what great things the priesthood has accomplished me poor have been brought here iron all lands and made prosperous People were brought here by thousands through the efforts of 500 elders who with oOO teams wont to the Missouri with provisions provi-sions and brought bick with them those who were waiting to reach Zion That was a great work and is one of the evidences evi-dences of the divine origin of this church President Cannon advised the Saints to pay their tithing and said obedience to this would win the blessings of God in a temporal way as well as spiritually The priesthood who had devoted their time in the interests of their brethren were not distinguished in the world fay their poverty because God had enriched them as he had promised Waen Saints struggle to obtain supremacy su-premacy over each other they were following fol-lowing the teachings of satan and the example ex-ample of the world The aspiration of the people should be to aid one another To bring about this condition the visitation visita-tion of angels was necessary The gospel had come to abolish the domination of the rich and the strong and to help the poor and uplift the world This church he continued will remain re-main under the elementary disturbance that will move the remainder of the world Built upon its broad foundation of truth and equality it will stand firm as the everlasting hills unshaken as the throne of God This is the only organization organiza-tion that can redeem the world and all the others are destined to fall in their purpose as they have failed in the past It is now time for the Saints to cease to bear contention There should be no litigation among the Saints and if he issued is-sued at law by a brother for his property prop-erty he should let it go rather than enter into the courts against his brother President Woodruff made a brief concluding con-cluding address in which he spoke of the blessing the Saints had of being baptized for the dead and advised Saints not to neglect the privilege Conference then adjourned for three months |
