Show AN UGLY SILO GIn G-In connection with the police investigation investiga-tion and the showing made of the utter demoralization de-moralization of the department people will not be surprised by the words of the patrolmen pa-trolmen quoted in the Tuesday mornings HERALD The officer tells of a deplorable condition of things a condition which should cause blushes to suffuse the cheeks of a good many men who have their headquarters head-quarters in the city hall rhis officer estimates esti-mates the number of men in this city who get their living by gambling at not less than three hundred most of whom are of the genu tinhorn or follows who swindle straight out and little bettor bet-tor in the scale of morals than common thieves This is a pretty small town to support so many of these criminal parisHes The worst feature of the business busi-ness is that all thoso fellows are known by the officers and it would be an easy matter to close up their business and run them out of town If the police department wore what it should bo thiswould bo done and in a little wniie the swindling shops would be shut and the bunco steerels the tinhorns tin-horns and ropersiu would be scarce in the streets of Salt Lake while gambling if practiced at all would ha conducted in back rooms where it would be less offensive of-fensive to the decent and reputable portion of the community Then there are scoreshundreds we believe be-lieve ho saidof vile women openly soliciting solicit-ing on the stroets and plying their awful trade in open defiance of tile ordinance and the police force Is there a member of the force from the chief down to the least important im-portant patrolman who Is willing to confess con-fess that prostitution cannot be lessened in this city that the bad women cannot be made to respect public sentiment enough to keep off the streets that the traffic cannot at least bo driven into retirement and not advertised as with a brass band and flaunting flaunt-ing banners 1 We charge that the inefficiency and the demoralization of the police department directly responsible for much of the violation viola-tion of the law and much of tho immorality which are giving Salt Lake such an ugly reputation throughoutthe country If bad L iz it < co 6 1 men and bad women are not encouraged in evil their wrongdoings are winked at and little effort is put forth to enforce the laws against objectionable characters |
