Show Worlds Fair Matters CHICAGO Sept 2The national Columbian Col-umbian commission met at noon today The first subject to come up was the read lug of a communication from the general secretary of the American Sabbath union asking a hearing for a delegation from that body on the subject of closing the exposition exposi-tion Sunday Finally after considerable debate and on motion of Commissioner De Young of California and amended by Massey delegate it was voted to appoint a committee of three to confer with the Stub bath union delegation and fix an hour dug ing tomorrows session at which the com mission would hear their memorial The memorial of the Sabbatn union to be presented sets forth that a proper observance observ-ance Sunday at the fair will honor the law of God by whom the Sabbath was made for man it will be in harmony with the letter and spirit of the laws of all the states and territories it will respect the conscientious convictions of all Christians who form part of the sterling character of tho world and who should have their feel tugs considered it will be in line with the Sabbath observances of the Centennial exposition ex-position it will follow the example set by English speaking nations at the Paris exposition ex-position that to open it on Sunday would unjustly compel the employees of the fair and of transportation companies to labor on the Lords day It would lead to excesses ex-cesses by the virtuous classes that the Saturday half holiday and the generosity of employers maybe depended upon to give all employees an opportunity to visit the fair that this government cannot afford to set such an example to the nations of the world that all foreigners should be given an opportunity to see an American Sun day as it is usually observed and finally that the event which the fair celebrates was the result of the supreme inspiration of a Christian man who took possession of the new world in the name of the Son of Man who is also Lord of the Sabbath After hearing ths day reports of the board of control president and director general a recess was taken until 3 oclock The national board of lady managers of the Columbia exposition met here this morning and elected Mrs Susan Gala Cook secretary in place of Miss Couzins Congressman Springer who was present was asked by Mrs Palmer to speak and he complied Mrs Palmer as president then presented her report and reviewed her European trip and its results President Palmer in his report congratu lated the commission on the way the work had been done the responses of foreign governments had been most satisfactory and presaged the greatest exposition of its kind ever attempted Twenty legislatures had made appropriations and thirty states and territories had made application for space Congress by its meagre appropriation appropria-tion has crippled the work but it is to ba hoped the next session will do better Ho asked the commission to giva careful consideration con-sideration to the cutting down of expenses so as to bring them within tim appropriation appropria-tion The report of DirectorGeneral Davis covered the work done under his direction the facts of which have been covered from time to time A report from the buildings and grounds committee estimated the expenses of the exposition ex-position up to the opening day at 17825453 In this connection a letter was received from President Baker of the local directory asking the commission to define its position on the subject of an appeal to Congress for a S > 000000 loan The matter was made the special order for tomorrow The remainder of the session was spent in discussing a resolution by Commissioner Harris providing for a committee to ask Congress to adjust the tariff on exhibits to further relieve foreign exhibitors from onerous imports The resolution was referred re-ferred to a committee |
