| Show The Griffin Murder Trial The fourth day of the Griffin murder trial passed off with the usual increasing interest More ladies were noticed among i the speotators than during the previous days ff Ben 13 Rich who was present at the coroners cor-oners inquest held over the body of John Hamer was called and testified as to the course of the bullet He was the last o I the witnesses called by the prosecution After Mr Rich had concluded Edward M Allison jr one of the attorneys for the defense made the opening statement He said they admitted that it was the ball from Griffins revolver that killed Hamer but it wasin tended to prove I that it was done in selfdefense He said the defense intended to prove that Hamor had been too previous with his revolver on several other occasions and that Griffin wasjustified in doing as he did to save his own life Charles Turner the negro porter was recalled and swore he had not made the statement that he saw Hamer with a gun in his hand when Griffin fired the first shot Colonel A B Hayes testified1 that he saw Will Young with Hamers revolver after the shooting He Hayes was editor of the Commercial at the time and asked Young to let him see the gun so he could get Description of it for the paper But Young refused and kept it in his pocket until an officer arrived C F Loomis and James Lansing two convicts in the penitentiary were nand n-and each testified that Turner had told hm thnt hn T LL uu OW = Uj uuvo nls un In his hand when Griffin fired the first shot They both said Turner had told them he had a bitter dislike for Griffin F A Voight the stenographer who took the proceedings of the caso at the prelim L inary hearing was put on the stand to testify to the accuracy in transcribing his notes on tho typewriter The prosecution made an effort to have the proceedings as taken in the lower court ruled out Bruce Taylor of Baker City Oregon was next called to the stand for the purpose pur-pose of testifying as to Hamers accuracy as a marksman The attorneys got into quite a difficulty and the court ruled out the statements of the witness The case was then adjourned till Monday morning I |
