| Show HEADSMAN CLAEKSON Is Vigorously Denounced by Mr Theodore Roosevelt For His Article in the North American Review I Re-view Censuring the Civil Service Commission Com-mission The Civil Service Law INDIANAPOLIS May 16At a banquet given this evening by a number of gentlemen gentle-men interested in civil service reform to Hon Theodore Roosevelt that gentleman after speaking at some length of the workings work-ings of the civil service law launched out c in answer to tho recent article of J S Clarkson in the North America Review He I vigorously denied the truth of Clarksons assertion that the civil service commission was more opposed to the Republican party under Harrison than it under Cleveland The commission is merely enforcing the law He said it vn I just as foolish for Clarkson to say the I Democrats had purchased Mugwump papers pa-pers as it was to declare that they had I purchased Clarkson to write the article which really played into the Democrats hands Then Roosevelt accused Clarkson of running the postofce department as a spoils machine treating fourthclass of flees as simply the property of the Congressmen Con-gressmen in whoso districts they were situated sit-uated In conclusion Roosevelt said Pres ident Harrison and the civil service commission com-mission under him were doing everything in their power to enforce civil service laws and extend their scope |
