| Show WALDENS ADDRESS The City Treasurer on the Big Issued at Hand Treasurer J B Walden was among the speakers announced for Friday evenings meeting but the fire alarm cut the session short and he was among those not hoard A HERALD reporter hearing that the speech was prepared asked Mr Walden if he had any objection to having it printed Ia and was courteousy furnishel with the following copy of the address i fellow Democrats A condition confronts us not a theory Such ucondition that brings Democrats together to-gether to meet the common enemy Upon our shoulders depends the propagation of reedozn of speech of religious privilege of wholesome economical laws a free un L trammolled ballot and a strict patriotic sentiment Wo are not hero to discuss the past history of Utah not here to discuss present environments of an honest wellmeaning municipal government but rather to accept all as history and look to the future of this great territory terri-tory and its interests From the very foundation of this great republic we find that parties come and parties go but the good old Democratic party stands as the rock of Gibraltar upon which rests the comfort of the American home It is traditional tra-ditional in American history that local interests in-terests at times bring forth local party organizations or-ganizations but when the mist clears when selfinterests and petty grievances are subdued sub-dued by good judgment and honest impulses im-pulses they sink into oblivion as does snow under the rays of a summer sky The Democratic party stands as the good mother of peace and Virtue to welcome all good citizens to its ranks I am honest in the belief that the time has arrived when a division di-vision upon party lines should be brought about We as Democrats must not lose sight of the fact that a great work is in store for us A campaign of educationof reasoning with pure unseltish Democratic ideas should bo presented to this public with all the force and vigor we can wield A strong party organization is now in order clubs should be formed throughout the territory ter-ritory and particularly throughout the city Over confidence has too often proven fatal to Democratic success and wo must not let that prove a stumbling block to victory Let every Democrat hero tonight consider it his patriotic duty thoroughly to post himself upon the present situation situa-tion how it can be bettered by tho application of Democratic methods and go forth into the camp of the enemy thoroughly armed with convincing facts and argument A large element of our citizens have cast their lot with our opponents oppon-ents purely and simply through the representations of a Republican sheet who for years has taken advantage of our local strifes to to thrust Republican doctrine down tho throats of the gullible I take it we wil havp a paperwhich henceforth will receive the cordial support of all Democrats Which will advocate only the application of Democratic methods to all questions politic either local or national Follow Democrats 1 Let us be up and doing Let us throw aside all selfish interests and past differ ences and with a united patriotic impulse work for the success of our party and the elevation of the public mind Our in terests will be better guarded by the party in power being all of one political faith A family in and of itself upon whose shoulders rests the responsibility of management With the motto that Public office is a public trust I bespeak for this community such an era of prosperity and enterprise that is characteristic I char-acteristic of Democratic management if the affairs of Utah arc placed under its control con-trol |
