| Show OUR WASHINGTON special of yesterday recorded the astounding fact that application appli-cation had been made to the secretary of war to permit the United States distriCt attorney here to defend the accused in the case of the recent Fort Douglas murder This is almost enough in the way of a surprise to take ones breath away The course suggested is very different from the one pursued in the case of Colonel AINSWORTH chief of the record and pension pen-sion office of the war department at Washington held to answer criminally for the Ford theater building disaster On the 22d inst the secretary issued an order containing the following That there may be no interference by the military with the civil law in the case and believIng that the ends of justice jus-tice and the interests of the military service ser-vice will be best subserved by leaving the matter at this time to tho determination of the civil authorities free from any influence in-fluence or complication that might ensue from a military inquiry the order of June S 101S93 is hereby revoked and the court dissolved This subordination of the military to the civil law is in accordance with the true American idea and any other view of the case will surely meet with strong remonstrance and opposition |
