Giving Somo Attention to the Question and the Charges Filed Against Mr Nash Appointments Expected WASHINGTON June 28 Special Secretary Smiths promise to remove certain cer-tain Republicans in Utah before the expiration ex-piration of their terms was fulfilled today to-day The appointment of surveyor general gen-eral was announced and the office goes to George W Snow Major Wilkes Mr Norton and Mr Mitchell of Salt Lake were among tho other candidates Byron Groo was also appointed registrar of the land office at Salt Lake A receiver will be appointed soon Most of the candidates made application either registrar or receiver and the list of candidates can-didates includes Frank Harris Mr Parks former appointee under the last Cleveland Cleve-land administration Dr Woodring of Mount Pleasant Mr Carpenter and Alex Mitchell candidate of the Tuscaroras All the appointments were straight out Democrats and the administration is not disposed to recognize any other sort in distributing the offices This is official In appointing Easly surveyor general of New Mexico the administration recognized recog-nized home rule Pressure was brought to bear on behalf of a man named Coleman Cole-man of Virginia but Secretary Smith took a candidate identified with the interests in-terests of the territory closely Since his arrival here Governor West has had interviews with the president and most of the cabinet and without exception excep-tion they aro disposed to do everything in their power to the advancement of Utah interests Governor Weat will re main here till about Saturday next Dr Fowler of Salt Lake is here accompanied accom-panied by his nieces of Virginia and they will go to the Worlds fair The postmaster general is giving some attention to the question of a chancre in the postmastership of Salt Lake and i the charges that have been made against Postmaster Nash can be backed up it is strongly believed that he will be removed within a short period Stranerham appointed surueyorgoneral of Idaho gives satisfaction to Idaho Democrats now in tho city He had the support of National Committeeman Beam and his friends Pressure is being brought to bear on the Officials The local Democrats were jubilant yesterday yes-terday over the appointment of two more good men to federal positions that of Byron Groo a registrar of the land office Frank D Hobbs whose succeeding term expires next month and that of George W Snow to ba surveyor general of Utah succeeding Ellsworth Daggett Both of the appointees are thorough Utah men having resided here all of their lives Mr Groo was for many years editor of THE HERALD and no man in the community is better known or more generally liked He is the present secretary of the Salt Lake County Democratic Demo-cratic committee and has done good service ser-vice to the cause of Democracy Mr Snow is the wellknown civil engineer en-gineer whose abilities and qualifications are unquestioned and who will discharge the duties of the surveyorgeneralship with credit He has served one term as a member of the board of education and has been prominent among the Democratic Demo-cratic workers of the city Neither gentleman made any scramble for the appointment contenting themselves them-selves with filing gilt edged endorsement endorse-ment Among Mr Snows papers was a certificate signed by the entire faculty of Eaaton college of Pennsylvania from which institution he holds a diploma Mr Snows appointment was a cruel blow to the Tuscaroras They had pinned their last hope of recognition on the surveyor generalship Shelton being their candidate Governor West wired his congratulations congratula-tions from Washington to the appointees yesterday afternoon FRAUDULENT PENSIONS A Number of Names Will Be Dropped from the Rolls WASHINGTON June 28They are after fraudulent pensioners A list comprising the names of a number of persons recommended recom-mended by Commissioner Lochren to be dropped from the pension rolls has been handed to Secretary Hoke Smith and he has approved the recommendation I has been found by investigations of the pension bureau that the persons named for various reasons are not entitled to draw pensions The work of examining the rolls with a view to the detection of fraud will be prosecuted with vigor and at the same time current issues will be carefully scrutinized with the same object Secretary Smith and Commissioner Lochren while prosecuting this work renew assurances previously given that just as much care will be exercised to secure pensions for those who are entitled to them under the law as will be used to prevent fraud CHINESE EXCLUSION The Country Will Be Rid of Chinese Who Hate Unlawfully Entered WASHINGTON June 28 Inquiry at the treasury department discloses the fact that about 515000 remains for the enforcement en-forcement of the several Chinese acts On July 4 a new appropriationof 50000 becomes be-comes available so that the aggregate fund available for the carrying out of the Chinese exclusion act including the Geary law will be f65000 As announced by Secretary Carlisle the policy of the administration will be in view of a lack of funds to rid the country of all Chinese who have entered unlawfully in violation of previously existing laws before endeavoring en-deavoring to send out Chinese who came in lawfully but are now under
