| Show SWORE HE PAID IT How Charles Whiting Came to Be Charged with Perjury The case of Charles Whiting charged with perjury was taken up in the district court yesterday The alleged perjury took place in Commissioner Norrells court on Sept 9 1892 It appears that Mrs Whiting had executed two notes to B K Bloch Co one in the sum of 150 and the other for 200 When the 150 note fell due Charles Whiting the womans husband went to Blochs place of business busi-ness and handed him a check for 200 for the payment of the 5150 and received 50 in cash Both notes were together and subsequently Bloch learned that the 200 note was missing He immediately charged Whiting with having taken it and began suit against him and his wife for the possession of the note or its value 200 and recovered a judgment Whiting didnt deny that he had the note but swore positively that he gave Bloch a check for the 200 note and took up the 150 note by a cash payment After judgment had been rendered against Whiting in the lower court he took an appeal to the Third district court and the case is now pending About the same time the alleged perjury charge was laid before the grand jury and Whiting was indicted The case was proceeded with up to 5 oclock When adjournment was taken until tomorrow morning at 10 oclock |
