Washingtons Birthday It is right that this 4 day should be observed ob-served as a national holiday It is the anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest of earths sons Whether GEORGE WASHINGTON is viewed as a divinely ordained or-dained leader oi men or as the natural product of the age for which he was fitted the necessity of the time and its emergencies emer-gencies it must be admitted that he was truly great and perfectly adapted for the work which he accomplished Born in 1732 his life and deeds are not so remote as to obscure or magnify the facts in the glory which surrounds his name and make luminous his personality personal-ity His history is modern and his rchievements so well known that no halo of fiction makes them shine or is needed to exaggerate their importance Also he needs no eulogy to hold him up to eminence emi-nence He lives in the hearts of his grateful grate-ful who largely owe to him their present liberties He is an example to the youth and a stimulus to their exertions ex-ertions His many virtues are properly extolled and his name should still be mentioned as the synonym for truth honor valor dignity and success In celebrating his birthday only worthy things should be said and worthy things should be done Mociiraticn ought to govern in feasting and rejoicing and the father of his country should be Honored in an honorable way THE HERALD bopes that its readers will spend a pleasant pleas-ant holiday on this anniversary ot the birth of the first President of the United States
