Show CREAMER NOT GUILTY It Took the Jury Just Twentyilio Minutes to Acquit He Told the Story of His Daughters Death A Note Transaction Which Lento Len-to a Perjury Charge The hearing of John Creamer charged with shooting Jerry Richardson jr at the Walker House in this city on Aug 24 1892 was resumed before Judge Zane yesterday morning by the crossexami nation of the defendant The examination was rigid and searching search-ing and from a certain standpoint was cruel The death of Ella Creamer the defendants daughter was gone into sparingly but every question seemed to cut the old mans heart like a knife Mr Creamer referred to the circumstances circum-stances of his daughters death I Now didnt you make up your mind without any evidence that Richardson was to blame in this matter said the attorney I think not he and had I not been friendly before that time How did the death of your daughter affect vour mind Well it has caused me lots of trouble and breaks me all up when I think of it When you met Richardson on the I I street the afternoon of the shooting as you claim to have done you said Well Jerry you did up my daughter didnt youYes and he said Ill do you up too If it broke you up so why did you mention the matter when you met Richardson Rich-ardson I Hewai mumbling something when I met him I What did you do then I went straight to a gunshop and bought a revolver 1 What did you do that for1 I did it to save my life fie had made threats against me before I Than followed a long string of questions relative to the manner in which the death I of Creamers daughter had affected him and the defendant twisted about in his chair as if in the greatest agony Finally he threw up his hands and said If you would only allow me to introduce the evidence evi-dence here that I want to I would show what connection Richardson had with my daughter At this juncture the court interfered stating that he thought Mr Creamer had been sufficiently interrogated with reference refer-ence to the death of his daughter and I Richardsons connection with it Captain Donovan was called and testified testi-fied thatRichardsonsreputation for truth and veracity was bad Captain Donovan further stated that Richardson swore to a lie when he said that he knew he wasshot before he left the Walker House Attention Atten-tion was first called to the wound on the Wasatch corner Several other witnesses were then called but their evidence was not of a very material ma-terial character Richardson was recalled just before both sides rested and questioned by the defense as to his testimony at Creamers preliminary hearing regarding the meeting of the two on the afternoon of tho shooting His testimony damaged the prosecution as he was brought up with several short turns by the interrogations of the defendants counsel Argument then followed and it was 330 oclock in the afternoon when the case reached the jury It took them just twentyfive minutes to return into court with a verdict of not guilty I |
