Show MANY NEW ENTERPRISES Promoters of the Safe Factory in the CityTile Works Salt Lake has turned her face to the rising sun and there are already a dozen new enterprises on foot W E Hubbard president of the chamber of commerce could hardly wait until the copper smelter had been settled before renewing his scheme for a large safe factory in this city that will give I employment to more men than the copper works I The promoters of this scheme and the men who are expected to advance the money are now in the city On the Knutsford register are the names of Herman Her-man Heren and G Wyrrs of Pittsburg Pa These gentlemen had a long consultation consul-tation with Mr Hubbard and a number of business men last evening They made known the size and character of the j safe works which they intended to erect and the amount of local aid they would I reguIre Mr Hubbard and Frank T Hiatt have been working on this project for several months and were about to give up the monthsk I undertaking when the copper smelter gave it new impetus with the result of I inviting the promoters to visit the city I As Mr Hubbard has the reputation of getting what he goes after it can be set I down that the wgrks will go up nearly as I soon as the copper works THE TILE WORKS Another important industry that will keep several hundred thousand dollars at home during the next few years and which is one of the best business propositions propo-sitions open to investors is a tile works I Sewer pipe can be made as well here as in any other place for there are a greater variety of clays well adapted for this purpose cality pur-pose than can be found in any other lo I There are two San Francisco gentlemen now in the city anxious take hold of this enterprise Any persons having suitable suit-able claysiftheywill but notify the chamber cham-ber of commerce it may enable them to get a good price for their land SOME CIGAR ITEMS B K Bloch estimates that there are 7000000 cigars sold in this city every year which should be manufactured at home This is an enterprise that would pay for the reason that the sentiment in favor of Utah made goods is going to grow and I every man will hereafter purchase those I articles with the Salt Lake brand in preference pre-ference to 1 any others when they are of equal quality and even if they are a shade inferior B Bloch when requested to furnish the figures gave the following as a rough estimate I es-timate of the cigars shipped into this city every twelve months esoooefaoo 5900tAlb 125 5000 G1OO JifB 7300 2000000 55 110000 3000000 30 u 90000 1000000 11 14000 Total 232700 Some of the high priced cigars could not be made here with a profit but Mr Block says that all the cheaper grades could be manufactured here as well as at Denver and other places It will be noticed that more of the cheaper grades are sold than the high priced goods and would require more hands to turn them out A factory to make this number of cigars would give employment to from 150 to 200 men and cigar makers get good wag sand s-and as a rule own their own homes and are a desirable class of laborers to have in any city |
