Show A BIG APPROPRIATION The Pension Bill the Greatest One That Was Ever Before Congress WASHINGTON Feb 10After routine business was disposed of the House proceeded pro-ceeded in Committee af the Whole to a consideration of the invalid pension appropriation ap-propriation bill Mr Mutchler in charge of the bill stated that the appropriation recommended 166400000 I was proposed pro-posed to amend the measure so the amount would be reduced to 166090000 This was the heaviest appropriation bill that had ever been before the American Congress The Committee on Appropriations Appropria-tions had come to the conclusion that there should be some retrenchment and recommended several amendments which it thought would institute a reform the first providing for a transfer of the pension pen-sion bureau from the interior to the war department The pension bureau could not be taken out of the arena of politics until it was put where political influence did not count Mr Mutchler then proceeded pro-ceeded to argue in support of the changes in pension laws recommended by the Committee on Appropriations Mr Grout opposed the transfer of the pension bureau and Mr Tarsney favored the proposed amendment Withoui closing clos-ing the general debate the committee rose and the House took a recess the evening session to be for the consideration of private vate pension bills The evening session was wasted in filibustering fili-bustering and at 930 pm a motion to adjourn prevailed no business whatever having been accomplished |
