Show HOMESTFAD STRIKE Report of the Investigating Committee Submitted to Congress WASHINGTON FeD 10Mr Gallinger from the select committee appointed by the Senate to investigate and report to the Senate the facts in relation to the employment em-ployment for private purposes of armed bodies of men or detectives in connection connecton with differences between workman and employers submitted the report of the committee today The committee expresses ex-presses the opinion that i the firms and corporations would discontinue the em r II ployment of armed men on the occasions of threatened or existing strikes their interests I in-terests would be better subserved It strikes your committee the report continues con-tinues that i Mr Frickhadacted upon the views laid down by Andrew Carnegie in his article The Results of Labor Troubles in the Forum magazine which in a recent letter to the chairman of this committee Mr Carnegie reaffirmed and had further extended negotiations ne-gotiations with workmen the Homestead strike might have been avoided The committee declares that the employment of a private armed guard at Homestead was unnecessary and at the same time I there seems to be no excuse for the strikers themselves Responsible laboring men should learn the lesson that they cannot I better their condition by violating law or I resisting lawful authority In conclusion the committee says its investigation I in-vestigation led i to conclude that the fault lies not wholly on one side and that I the middle ground seems t be in the direction I di-rection of arbitration Without making I i any recommendations but pleading for I arbitration the committee closes its report I by saying To this end we bespeak the I cooperation of all patriotic citizens and I your committee will welcome any lat la-t tion which will tend to secure the laboring man every right without I depriving employer for both are guaranteed I guaran-teed by the constitution and laws of the I land n |
