Show THE CEOEAL AT OGDEN The Light of Asia Performance Heartily Appreciated A Largo and Paslilonnble Audience i Attendance Good Work ot tho Soloists A Successful Trip A complimentary audience filled the Grand opera house at Ogden last evening to hear the Salt Lake Choral society sing the oratorio The Light of Asia It was complimentary both in size and quality for Ogdens best were there Every seat on the lower floor was filled The audience was very dressy the glaring glar-ing shirtfront of tho dress suit alternat with the bright hues of the ladies costumes cos-tumes Tho house was remarkable in size when one considers that a heavy snowstorm snow-storm raged all the afternoon and evening even-ing Had tho weather been good the attendance at-tendance would probably have been increased in-creased from 8 to 1200 or more I That the people of Ogden appreciate tho higher class of music was evedenced by the close and absorbed ab-sorbed attention with which they followed the grand music of Dudley Bucks oratorio The applause was generously gen-erously bestowed on chorus and soloists but only reached the height of an encore once and that was following the duet between be-tween Mr Pyper and Mrs Plummer which occurs in the first part The rendition of the oratorio was not quite equal to that given by the Choral society in tabernacle in December and which was fully reviewed in TH HERALD HER-ALD at the time In the first production there was in addition to the chorus and orchestra the tabernacle organ which added to the power and beauty of the chorus effects The organ of course lacking in the production last night While perhaps the efforts of the chorus were not so grand tho soloists found it much easier to fill with melody the Grand at Ogden than the tabernacle The soloists were all warmly received Mrs Plummers sweet clear pure voice striking every tone with precision which only follows long and vigorous training easily made her the favorite Mr Pypers easy vocalization won him immediate recognition The favors were bestowed equally upon Mr Whitney Mr Peabody Mr Ensign and Mrs Gray and Mrs Sykes Professor Evan Stevans added one more argument to his standing as a great leader Willard Weihe was in the lead of the orchestra Dr Utter was the lecturer and greatly pleased with his descriptive powers To sum up the visit to Ogden of the Choral society has been wholly a success The choral society had a pleasant outing established their excellence to the Ogden folk gave the best possible advertising to the June Musical festival which they aro to conduct and last of all put money in their purse At least 250 members of tho Choral society took part in the entertainment |
