Show LET US REJOIGE r I The Sum Is Raised and the Copper Plant Assured < A GLORIOUS DAYS WORK The Council Comes to the Rescue and Appropriates 25000 THE VOTE WAS UNANIMOUS Posey Green Notified That Their Proposition was Accepted Ono Hundred Thousand Dollars and 100 Acres of Land Will Be Given Thorn Something About the Durango Works of Posey Green The council knuckled down They had the will and they found the way to appropriate 25000 to secure the copper smelter The special session which convened at 10 oclock yesterday transacted business Ii of momentous importance It metin response to an overwhelming I popular sentiment to appropriate a large sum of the peoples money in the interest of the people without explicit legal sanction sanc-tion The will of the people was accepted as sufficient law and the measure could have been defeated by the opposition of a single large property owner But so strong and universal was the sentiment in its lavor that there was no man to raise his hand against it W McCormck the largest individual subscriber to the 100000 fund was present pres-ent to advocate its passage and the lobby was packed with citizens The councilmen present were Rich Folland Hardy Horn Wantland Heiss Lawson Beardsley Kelly Moran Si mondi Karrick and Bell with Loofbou row in the chair To obviate the legal obstruction the city attorney had been spirited away but owing to a demand for his presence the seargeantatarms was instructed to scour the town for the delinquent attorney When City Attorney Hoge put in an appearance his opinion was not wanted and he was promptly muzzled while Rich thought their action was open to suspicion suspi-cion But the great lobby of property owners could be heard to murmur a dissent and the council knew what the populace wanted and proceeded to comply in hot haste ME MCORNICKS PLAN W S McCornicK pointed out the way by saying the council could appropriate the money to buy land The real estate men had offered to make the amount good in town lots and acreage and the land scheme worked like magic Even Rich and Moran now Haw the legal obstacles vanish and ceased their constitutional ravings Rich came to the rescue with the following resolution Resolved That the city government purchase pur-chase from the real estate men of the city its 000 worth of unincumbored real estate in the hands of the citizens committee and that the citizens committee shall be tho appraisers of said real estate between the owner and the city payment to be made in lour equal installments install-ments Bell tried to dodge the question and get at the money by taking a skip through the Pioneer square and doctored up the following I move that the Pioneer square be given to one or more representative citizens of Salt Lake City as a guarantee for a fund to the amount of 25000 for one or more years at a rate of Interest inter-est not too exceed 6 per cent per annum for public improvements THE FINAL PROPOSITION A recess was taken and after the wise heads had been consulted the following was reported Resolved That this city purchase through George A Lowe W H Rowe Speccer Claw son J S Cameron J M Gray C F Loof bourow L C Karrick trustees 25000 worth I of unlncumbered real estate and that the sum of 25000 be and Is hereby appropriated for that purpose and that the olty treasurer is hereby authorized and directed to pay said 525000 to the above named persons at once the title to said property to be taken into Salt Lake City corporation It passed unanimously and the lobby cheered and nearly pulled the councilmen to pieces with their congratulations |
