Show Trade In the East There is still much uncertainty about the future of trade in Now York Monetary legislation is no longer expected though the effects of three months of unccrtaint remain The volume of business is largo in values than a year ago but the advanco in prices has been still greater showing decrease in quantities moved Eastbound shipments from Chicago for half of February Febru-ary have been MG957 tons against 2032 last year a loss of 23 per cent This i is I I mainly due to tho shortness of crops but the output and movement of iron are also much smaller than a year ago and the for eign trade here is I eiAn falling below last years both in imports and exports On tho other hand wool manufacture is flourishing though sales of wool do not show quite the increase they did in January the cotton manufacture is in good shape Shimnents Shipment of boots and shoes steadily exceed last years though but 4 per cent in quantity and the prospect in the building trades is considered bright The tone of reports from other cities is generally favorable Though there some complaint of collections at the south be cause cotton is held back for higher prices and trade is dull at Memphis and Atlanta and fair only at New Orleans the prospect is i bright at Savannah and trade is of good volume in spite of bad weather at St Louis 1 and fairly healthy at Kansas City St I Paul 1 and Minneapolis have active trade I I though 1 in flour output there is the titus L j decrease for the j season At Omaha trade I is i fair but collections rather slow at Mil I waukee it is improving with fair weather for logging though the cut of lumber will be below last years Chicago notes large increase in wheat movement but heavy de crease in dressed beef lardhides and woo saies considerable above last years in dry goods clothing and boots and shoes and satisfactory collections The tributary re I gion is considered healthy confidence is i strong and money plenty among dealers Detroit notes quiet trade and only fair col L lections l out at Cleveland and Pittsburgh some Improvement in iron is noticed tho latter reporting finished iron in good de mand and blooms stronger the coke strike having some influence At Cincinnati trade b average but especially good in dry goods with the south Philadelphia notes fair ac tivity in combing wool but orders for woolen goods are generally small The cotton hosiery aad knit goods works are on full time with fair profits and other trades in fair condition At Boston wool is firm and general business good but orders for boots and shoes are small in amount and unsatisfactory in price and tho winters advance has been lost through competition while leather and other mater ials j do not decline The outgo of currency to tho interior ap pear to have begun however notwitn standing the fact that at almost every other city the money marltet is easy or growing easier and scarcely one now reports the market close The stock market has been depressed in part by the failure announced and in part by the reduced earnings on some roads but nothing appears to indicate that negotiations between trunk lino oresi i dents are not progressing satisfactorily The business failures occurring through ont the country during the duTng past seven days as reported by R G Dun Co number for the United States 240 and for Canada W 5 or a total of 205 as comoared with a to tal or xJt last week and 303 the week pre ious to the last For the corresponding week of last year the figures were 271 rep ig resenting 230 failures in the United states and 41 in the Dominion of Canada |
