Show SENATOR QUAY A Washington correspondent sends it abroad that Senator QUAY soon after the adjournment of Congress will prosecute for libel the newspapers which have charged him with dishonesty The correspondent cor-respondent is probably mistaken The time for QUAY to have begun libel suits was lust summer when the New York World the Evening Post and other great newspapers of the country wero daily denonncing him as little less than a thief During all those weeks he was silent not doing even so much as to deny the charges by his silence conveying the impression to many that he was guilty and therefore dared not undertake a refutation The result of the awful allocations and his refusal to deny them was the overwhelming defeat of his candidate candi-date for governor in the great state of Pennsylvania and tho loss to his party of thousands of votes If Senator QUAY had instituted suits for libel six or eight months ago he would have checked the current which was made to run against him and whether or not he had been able to punish his traducers tra-ducers if they were traducershis innocence inno-cence would have been established at least in the minds of those who didnt want to believe him guilty Whatever of advantage advan-tage he might have possessed has been lost by delay and if he goes into court now it will be to reestablish a character which has been pretty badly demoralized by reason rea-son of half the newspapers in the country taking advantage of his cowardice to assail himWo Wo dont believe that Senator QUAY will commence any libel suits because we do believe that he is a mighty bright man |
