Show THE SUNNY SOUTH Why She Should Receive More Attention HIGH BUT NEGLECTED COUNTRY The Stock Wool Fruit and Other Resources of a Comparatively Unknown Section Sec-tion of Utah When the pioneers landed in the Great Salt Lake basin in July 1847 a scene of disheartening desolation presented itself to their view and the promise of a large reward for the first oar of corn they shoulda raise here had been made to them During the halfcentury that has passed since that time what wonderful changes have taken place in these valleys and what great and wonderful resources have been developed And yet the story is not half told The northern part of Utah has been held up to the world and the world has in a measure opened its eyes to the greatness of the country Now southern Utah begins to put in her claim for attention and she has good ground for a large share of patronage Southern Utahais rich in mineral in fact it would appear if developments wero made here that this is the great repository of the mineral wealth of Utah The various places where ore has been taken out would sink almost into insignificance or would appear as the branches of a huge tree the mighty trunk and root of which is found in southern Utah But mineral is among the least of our capabilities for greatness Here is a tropical climate and rich soil where the products of the torrid zone can be raised and the most delicate vegetation of the temperate zones may be grown to a surplus Cotton of the finest quality far superior in fiber than that of the southern states is yielding to the planter at the rate of GOO pounds per acre with three pickings 3 year This product makes a profitable crop where there are children or cheap help in picking which isthe greatest part in cotton raising The past three or four years but little cotton was raised because there was not a market for it but now thatthe Rio Virgin mill is running and a 1 good demand for cotton batting and cotton coton goods created there will be much more raised These mills employ fortyfive persons per-sons on cotton and woolen goods and eighteen looms are kept busy Besides these advantages there are vast ranges found in southern Utah capable of grazing thousands of heads of cattle Thirty or forty thousand cattle belong to Kane and Washington counties of which there will be some 10000 or 12000 to market the coming summer There has been for several years a breeding up of stock in this country until the cattle are of good quality being well mixed with Polled Augus Galloway Hereford Holstein and Durham making a great improvement 4 over what there was a few years ago Cattle arc in excellent condition since the feed has been good and the weather this winter has not been cold at any time tme Then there comes the sheep industry A wonderful country for sheep in Southern Utah Neighboring on to 100000 head of sheep are roaming the hills and valleys here and they are all doing exceptionally well This is a chief source of cash revenue rev-enue for this southern country Upwards of 500 000 pounds of wool are yearly shipped from here to the various wool markets The number of horses in Kane and Wash ington counties is about five thousand of which a large number are ready for market There is but little common stock left in this country The favorites for breeding up have been the Norman Clydes dale and Cleveland Bays part of which were direct importations from England and France and the best selections of these strains are chosen Horses thrive well in southern Utah on the ranges and breeders find it profitable business to raise for the market the only drawback being that they are so far away from a good market With the building of railroads in this direction and the opening of the Union stock yard in Salt Lake city a good market will be opened here and the prospects are that all this will come in the near future for it is fully decided we believe that the Denver and Rio Grande Western shall be extended soon as possible to St George f I will be then if not before that capital ists will find wide avenues for the investment invest-ment of means and southern Ttah will begin be-gin to put forth her strength and show that her claims to recognition have not been idle talk Iron County Keics |
