building that stands today anywhere in this intermountain region has been the I subject of so much deserved admiration as las that beautiful structure which rears its massive head over the mud of First South a few steps east of the Deseret bank corner Outside of its commercial utility it stands a great and fitting monument to I the late Captain Hooper whose name it i bears I Many partial descriptions of this building have been printed but no good idea of it could bo given till now as it nears completion comple-tion Viewing it from a point at the head of Commercial street many a man has been I heard to remark ITS A rcnrccT PICTURE The first story with its massive piers and I lintels of red sand steno is as striking as it I is substantial relieved as it is by heavy woodwork and broad French plate glass I windows Then tho main entrance circled I by the great arch resting at either side on L I clusters of Romanesque columns and re lieved with Rennaissance carving is a feature of which ono never tires The 1 I hlhvay with its tiled floor its hiph L 4r J t k S = = = = z = I r = = i T l I walls with panels of oak and plate glass will always be a seductive invitation for all to enter and those who accept the invitation in-vitation find at their right hand a handsome hand-some elevator car to lift thorn to the floors above or if they prefer a slower route a bread oak stairway leads them by easy stages from one floor to another until the top is reached But to return to the front elevation the upper stories of gray Kyune stone are in pleasing contrast to the darker shades below be-low The proportions are admirable giv 4 ing window spaces broad and high without detracting from tho strength or appearance of the structure A HEHALD reporter who was shown through the building by Mrt J E Caine yesterday was surprised to see the outlay of money the results of which can be seen on every hand There is no feature of the building that has been slighted and the result is beauty symmetry and the essen tials to comfort wherever you look THE STEAM HEATING riAXT is as complete as engineering skill can make it Two mammoth 40 horse power l boilers generate tho steam Either one has capacity enough to heat the entire building so that one is always kept in ro icrvo for an emergency Mr P J Moran Aho engineered this part of the work says that it is a job of which he will the glass Each light of glass in those upper stories weighs from eighty to one hundred pounds tako the low figure and you have 100 pounds to the window there are thirtytwo windows over five thousand
