Show THOSE INTERVIEWS In another column will be found some expressions of opinion regarding the sale of Old Fort Square The gentlemen who speak with few exceptions ara well known as old citizens and large property I owners They are men of intelligence and foresight and progressive in their ideas and operations and several of them are identified in a most substantial way with the foremost institutions of the city But above all they talk good common sense They know in the first place that the city can not lawfully dispose of the square and then they know that it would be a gross outrage to give the block away They also know as we all do that the square will cut not the least figure in the building of the projected railway as the ownership by Mr BACON of the block will not induce his backers to put money into the road As stated other wealthy citizens wore approached and while they asked that their names be withheld lest they be assailed by tho vicious and unprincipled newspapers which are encouraging the council to rob the community of this valuable valu-able park site they were especially vigorous vigor-ous in denunciation of the outrage THE HERALD hopes that the council will not perpetrate this great wrong and we appeal to the patriotism the integrity the sense of duty of the members not to rob the people of Salt Lake in order to enrich an impudent speculator who manifests in this business little more respect for tho rights of the community than the fellows who jumped the capitol grounds and the Tenth ward square a few years ago We also again warn tho councilmen that they will never be able to regain the confidence and respect of their fellow citizens if they vote away that square but will so long as they reside in this community be regarded as enemies to the people if nothing worse |
